Rachel's Life

Rachel Joy Scott was born on August 5, 1981 to Darrell Scott and Beth Nimmo, who later divorced. She was one of five children. She had two older sisters, Bethanee and Dana, and two younger brothers, Craig and Mike. Craig was in the library the day of the shooting, which took the lives of twelve students and one teacher.

She is the subject of many books and is the inspiration for Rachel's Challenge, a program for the prevention of teen violence, based on her life and writings. My school had the honor of being part of the program, and now has a a new club called "Chain Links" that promotes our school to be a better place. Her father was previously a pastor in a church, until her parents were divorced. Beth then moved with the children to Littleton, Colorado, where she was remarried to Rachel's step-dad, Larry. Darrell became a sales manager at a food company near Denver, and had joint custody of Rachel and her siblings. When she was younger, Rachel attended Governor's Ranch Elementary School, and then Ken Caryl Middle School. Rachel had known Dylan since kindergarten, but did not know he would be the one to end her precious life.

Rachel was an aspiring writer and actress, and had just finished a school play, Smoke in the Room, in which she played the lead. she was active in her church youth group, Breakthrough. She was known to be friendly and caring to others, and reached out to people often. She loved God, and hoped to one day change the world by little acts of kindness. She sure has changed my world, and many others. Chuck Norris dedicated his autobiography to Rachel, and wrote the foreword for Rachel's Tears.

She left behind six diaries talking about her life, her love of God, and how she wanted to change the world. She drew many pictures in her diaries. If you would like to read some of her diary entries and see some of her drawings, I strongly suggest you read the book Rachel's Tears. Many of her writings and drawings are featured in the book.

Rachel had a feeling she was going to die young, and even wrote in her journal less than a year before she died "This will be my last year Lord. I have gotten what I can. Thank you." Also, on the day of Columbine she drew the picture of the rose, which depicted eyes crying thirteen tears (the number of people who died that day) onto a rose (the new generation of hope that will arise from the tragedy).

Many of Rachel's quotes are known widely, including the quotes "I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion then it will start a chain reaction of the same" and "I won't be labeled as average."

Rachel lived her short seventeen years on this planet to the fullest, and is now in a new place, where the worries and hatred that consume this world no longer exist.

    4. Those boys killed themselves after all of this. According to the Christian faith they wouldn't be welcome at the pearly gates to begin with. They have already received eternal punishment.

    5. The Bible says that you are forgiven what whatever you did, and you can go to heaven as long as you believe he died for your sins. Chances are that they didn't believe considering what they did to her.

    6. Do you think her last words actually were "you know I do"? Most sites swear by it, but there are a few conflicting reports.

    1. Even though they were horrible people, it s in no way 'good' that they commit suicide. NOBODY--no matter how sinful--SHOULD DIE LIKE THAT.

    3. And sadly similar shootings have happened all across the country by copycatters. So tragically, just because the gunmen died didn't mean it never happened again and will never happen again.

  15. I just found out about Rachel's story today at school it's very touching and inspiring Rachel has touched the hearts of millions of people everywhere. Rachel has made me think that every day isn't promising like she said in her diary so you should love everyone as if you might not see them tomorrow

  16. Rachel was very different she knew she was going to die but why would she think so. She seemed not the one to think that but it happened she died soon when she wrote that in her diary. In her death she didn't really die she grew out and spread to everyone. Everyone just needs a change sometime

  23. I am in 7th grade and learned about her today. I just joined Rachel's challenge. Her story is so inspiring. I was sometimes mean to people but I want to change that for the sake of Rachel. She was an amazing girl, a role model who I idolize and am currently making a collage of. I'm sorry she died but I'm glad to have her as an idol

  27. Friends! The good death is death for Christ. Having accepted a Martyr's death, Christ gives Rachel a special crown. She is a strong girl despite her young age, did not renounce Christ even under threat of death life. And in the day of judgment, He did not renounce it. Handle Rachel touched my heart. I saw myself then, what you need to work while studying Rachel. She sought the Truth and found It. She forgave the fact that it is difficult to forgive. She performed two important commandments: I am the Lord thy God... thou shalt have no other gods before My face.
    - love your neighbor as yourself. You have the lighthouse, we should focus on in order to come to our heavenly Father.

  30. A speaker from the Rachel's Challenge program came to my school just yesterday and spoke to me and the students at my school about Rachel's story. She's an inspiring girl and I'm now more aware of those around me that I love and care for. Rachel's story has made a difference in my life and I am now determined to discover more about her story. I want to discover ways that I myself could change and accept Rachel's challenge.

  31. I've been out of school for 10 years now and I still remember when they came to my school in my senior year and still today her message still speaks to me Jesus I said love thy neighbor her message is just another way of saying it this world needs Jesus more today than it has ever needed him cause he was willing to die for us and he showed Rachel Scott how much she was going to impacted this world cause of Jesus I pray everyone find Jesus cause he loves you so much that he died on the cross for you he shedded his innocent blood and was rushe 3 days later just to save us from our sins if you want to change the world you have to have Christ in your heart that is what Rachel is saying I believe

  32. I'm inspired after hearing and reading about Rachel's story. The way she devoted herself to God in reaching people seems simple but was effective. Her stand for the truth at the point of death touched me deeply. She is an amazing girl who changed people around her and has touched many many people through her life story. Her death might have occurred on April 1999, but today she lives in my heart and many other's too.

  34. I hope people understand how we can change and get along with one another not take other people's lives in jeopardy it's wrong I hope we can change that by putting our anger in something good. Not wasting other people's or doing something stupid to our selves it's called commonsense.this woman who is God chid didn't deserve it no one did she will be in prayers and so will others.

  35. Me and Rachel saw the world the same way. I always believed in helping those who are outcasts in school and in public. Rachel's Tears is a great testimony of how one 17 year old girl changed the world 🌎. I see Rachel as my little sister. I will see you Rachel in heaven when my walk in this world is finished ♥
